I guess it just comes down to choice ,,if only they would rent to you for a week to see how it feels before buying!! still undecided here??????????

The 40gb PS3 cannot play any PS2 games. The 60 GB can all PS2 games, while the 80GB can on play some PS2 games. I don’t think they make the 60GB anymore, they are much harder to find.

you can play NTSC games in pal ps2’s with swap magic and a chip, but not the other way around.
the reason is that PAL is a higher resolution, meaning a higher framebuffer. The dvd hardware in a NTSC ps2 can’t handle video with a framebuffer size higher than NTSC has. It doesn’t matter how you mod it, it can’t deliver the signal from the disc to the video output.
You can play ntsc dvd’s on PAL hardware because PAL’s framebuffer is bigger, so it still fits… but you may find the video looks weird, it won’t take up the whole screen, it may not be a stable picture.
Some games have both NTSC and PAL on the same disc. But not very many.
